Larry Wendt passes

Lawrence “Larry” John Wendt, age 66, of Eagle Lake, MN, died Sunday, May 25, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, MN. Funeral Services will be held Friday, May 30, 2014 at 6:00 P.M. at Grace Lutheran Church in Mankato, MN. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the church. Pastor Scott Olson will officiate. Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells, MN is in charge of arrangements.
Larry was born August 12, 1947 in Chippewa Falls, WI to Herbert L. and Eleanor (Kopischkie) Wendt. After settling in Ft. Atkinson, WI, he was active in basketball and baseball, and participated in several state and national level tournaments. After high school, Larry attended UW-Whitewater and UW-Madison. He graduated from Brown Institute of Radio Broadcasting in Minneapolis, MN, with his first Phone Radio/TV Engineering License. His first radio job was Sports Director in Longview, TX where he met Pamela. They married in 1970 and moved to Minnesota. Larry left radio and worked for a period of time selling cars at Snell Motors. He then returned to school, graduating with honors with an undergraduate degree in Mass Communications, and a Master’s degree in Counseling and Student Personnel from Mankato State University. Throughout his adult life, Larry continued his love for sports by umpiring baseball and softball, and in later years concentrated on youth, college and recreational men and women’s fastpitch softball. In 2011 he was inducted into the North American Fastpitch Association’s National Hall of Fame as an umpire. In addition to sports, Larry enjoyed camping, spending time with his wife, sons and grandchildren, boating, gardening and traveling.
Larry is survived by his wife, Pamela (Southerland) Wendt of Eagle Lake; sons, Charles (Maria) Wendt of Waldorf, Jon (Barbara) Wendt of Worthington and Eric (Jennifer) Wendt of Lake Crystal; 7 grandchildren, Alexandra, Avery, Grayson, Maya, Collin, Marcus and Matthew; 2 sisters Eleanor (Harry) Lynch and Ann Gallagher; along with several nieces and nephews and their families.
He is preceded in death by his son, Kevin Paul Wendt; father, Herbert L. Wendt; mother, Eleanor Wendt Weber; nephew, Curtis M. Gallagher and 2 brothers-in-law: Michael Gallagher and Nevil Southerland.
